More about Mentimeter

Mentimeter is a tool for engaging learners in real-time polls and quizzes (though, it can be used asynchronously as well) in slide-based presentations called Mentis (singular = Menti).

Mentimeter is ideal for boosting learner engagement in live classes, gathering real-time feedback and facilitating active learning activities. It can be use for icebreakers at the start of class, knowledge-checks at the end of class and anything in between! Responses to Mentimeter polls and quizzes can be viewed as soon as they're submitted to facilitate live discussions between you and your learners, and you can even gamify your classes using Mentimeter quiz competitions that function similarly to Kahoot!

When should you use Mentimeter?

Mentimeter can be used during classes to supplement whatever it is you are teaching. For example, you could run a short Mentimeter presentation at the start of class to gauge how your learners are feeling and how they're progressing with the course. Or, you use polls and quizzes for low-stakes knowledge checks on what you've been discussing in class and/or the content you've been presenting in PowerPoint or Keynote slides. Mentimeter is not recommended for graded assessment.

Mentimeter can also be used asynchronously, such for non-urgent polls. For example, you might provide a Menti in class one week, let your learners participate in it over the course of a week, then review the results in class the next week.

Who can use Mentimeter?

The Learning Centre's resources will focus on using Mentimeter for formal learning and teaching purposes. However, note that you are free to use Mentimeter in professional settings (e.g. to facilitate polls during work meetings), as it can be accessed independent of the myLearning.

Comparing Mentimeter with other tools

Several tools in AU allow for polling, quizzing and/or general learner engagement, so you might be wondering when exactly you should be using Mentimeter over something else. Generally speaking, Mentimeter is AU's recommended tool for formative, live polling and quizzing. However:

you should use Canvas Quizzes for graded, live or asynchronous quizzing
you may prefer to use H5P for formative, asynchronous quizzing that is embedded onto content pages
you may prefer to use Canvas Quizzes for formative, asynchronous polling and quizzing if you don't intend to use Mentimeter for anything else and don't want to use a new tool
Miro for more collaborative and in-depth discussions with a strong visual component

Mentimeter is not integrated into myLearning meaning you will log into it independent of the learning management system.

Step-by-step instructions

Go to mentimeter.com (AU login).
You will immediately be redirected to AU Okta (the Mentimeter login screen will only show very briefly). Input your AU login credentials (AU Account ID and password) and multi-factor authentication to log in.

What if you can't log in?

If you are unable to log in to Mentimeter, please email the AU LMS Support Team to get your account activated.

Learner access to Mentimeter

Learners have the same access to Mentimeter as you do and will access it the same way. They can access Mentimeter on their own accord, outside of their teaching course sites, meaning they can use it for things like class presentations.

Navigating Mentimeter

Mentimeter is fairly straightforward to navigate. When you open the site, you will land on the Mentimeter dashboard, the 'Home' page in particular. Here you will see a list of the Menti presentations you have worked on recently, as well as a bunch of Mentimeter templates and help resources to get you started. Sometimes, you will even see a summary of results of your the most recent presentation you've run.

There are only a handful of other areas to explore from the Mentimeter dashboard. From the left-hand navigation menu, you can select 'My presentations' to view a complete list of Mentis you have created, 'Shared with me' to view a complete list of Mentis that others have shared with you, or 'Shared templates' to view and templates created specifically for Adelaide University (these will be created as common teaching uses cases are identified). There's also a search bar along the top of the screen.
