Overview

There are many different types of H5P activities available to you in AU, each fulfilling a different purpose. This page will show you the basics of how to create, manage and insert activities (all using H5P via the Canvas rich content editor).

How to create, manage and insert H5P activities

H5P activities can be created and inserted via the Canvas rich content editor (they can be created the same way from the H5P website if preferred). Refer to the the presentation below to find out how.

Managing existing H5P content

You can edit H5P content that's already been created by selecting the 'Edit' icon (A) next to an activity's name. Selecting the three vertical dots adjacent the 'Edit' icon [1] will open the 'More Options' menu (B), where you can 'Clone' (create a copy), 'Move', and 'Delete' your content. (The sharing options shown in the 'More Options' menu are discussed in the page on folders and sharing).

Locating shared content

By default, H5P will show you only the activities that you have created yourself, and not those that have been shared with you. This is shown in the left-hand sidebar, where you will see 'My Content' (A) select.

To view content that has been shared with you (to edit or insert it), select either of the other view options:

The 'Shared with me' (B) view will show you content that's been shared with you by other users only.
The 'All Content' (C) filter will show you content you've authored, content that's been shared with you, as well as institutional 'green folders' that contain content shared with all of AU (there's more on these on the page about sharing content).

If you're having trouble finding something, view 'All Content' and use the search bar [1].

Activity types catalogue

The activity types available in AU H5P are outlined in the tabs below, with links to vendor resources on how to create them.

To help you decide what activity types are suitable for you and your course, they have been categorised by function and labelled based on their estimated complexity to build. The most commonly-used activity types have also been highlighted with yellow stars , so you can get a sense of what other educators are using.

The estimated complexity of creating each activity type has been determined based on the below rating scale.

Create short, formative quizzes to test learner knowledge of specific topics. Commonly placed at the end of a page to reinforce learner understandings of the new content. Allows for multiple question types, which are also available as their own activities.

Create click-to-reveal quizzes where learners guess what is being depicted in an image. For example, have learners guess what part of a cell, human, plant or animal that they're looking at.

Single Choice Set

Create multiple choice question sets where questions only have one correct answer. Functionally the same as what's available in the Quiz (Question Set) activity, but features a more responsive design.

Provide learners a series of paragraphs and have them answer by arranging them into the correct order.

Tools for making content interactive

Tools for making content interactive

H5P allows you to add interactive features to your course content and multimedia to make them more engaging. For example, letting you turn large chunks of content into interactive PowerPoint-link presentations and add interactive popups to images.

Course Presentation	Present content in an interactive, PowerPoint-like presentation which can contain text, image, videos, and also interactive elements like quiz questions and buttons. Course presentations can be made in slide or surface mode. Definitions: Slide mode presentations are like PowerPoint presentations where learners progress through content in a specific order. Surface mode presentations restrict movement to navigational buttons, so that learners progress based on what buttons they select, rather than the specific order in which the slides are organised. Slide mode presentations are recommended, as they are easier to create and allow more straightforward user navigation.	Vendor guide (with example)	Med2
Image Hotspots	Provide learners an image and have them select various hotspots to reveal information about the image. Great for enriching infographics and diagrams with in-depth information about what's being depicted.	Vendor guide (with example)	Med1
Interactive Video	Upload a video and apply interactive content to it, such as multiple choice and fill in the blank questions and pop-up text, to make it more engaging for learners. Note-taking and reflection tools

Note-taking and reflection tools

These types of tools allow you to embed note-taking and reflection opportunities into your course. These activities aid learning and knowledge retention, and can even be used to provide scaffolded worksheets for learners to fill out prior to in-person activities.

Live polling tools

Live polling tools

Live polling tools allow you to gather learner thoughts and opinions during live classes (though, they can technically be embedded onto pages to asynchronous polling). Note that Mentimeter is also being procured for AU, which may serve as an alternative to H5P live polling activity types.

Coming from UniSA learnonline or UoA MyUni?

Several H5P activity types available in UniSA and UoA H5P are not available in AU H5P because they do align with the Adelaide University Attainment Model and accessibility standards.
