Overview

All Canvas course content types will all be reusable using the same methods. This includes all copied content in the Temporary Content Repository, regardless of whether it's come from UniSA learnonline or UoA MyUni (Moodle content is converted to Canvas content). This resource will show you how to reuse these content types, like pages, files, assignments, discussions and rubrics (quiz/quiz question reuse is covered separately).

Make sure you understand the content reuse guidelines before you progress!

Content reuse recommendations

There are several methods for reusing these kinds of content. These options are listed below, with recommendations.

How to reuse pages, files, assignments and discussions

In some cases, you may choose to copy specific pieces of text from a Temporary Content Repository course and paste that text onto pages, assignments and/or discussions that you already have created in your myLearning course. This is a great way to balance the creation of new content with the reuse of critical bits of information from existing institutions.

When you copy your text, it's possible that you will also copy any HTML stylings that may have been applied to that text in learnonline or MyUni (this could be something as simple as a unique font). Because myLearning has its own HTML stylings, it's important that HTML style artefacts from learnonline or MyUni are removed during this copy/pasting process. To do so, we recommend you paste your text into a plain-text editor like the Notes/Notepad apps on your computer (but not Word) before bringing it into your myLearning course. Doing so will remove any custom stylings and ensure that whatever ends up in myLearning has myLearning stylings applied.

Apart from that, the copy/paste process is as straightforward as it seems - simply copy from the Repository, paste into a plain-text editor, then copy from the plain-text editor and paste into your myLearning course development shell.

If you want to reuse entire pages, files, assignments, discussions and rubrics (settings and all), then we recommend you use the 'Copy to' feature on each individual content item while viewing them in the Repository. Find out more in the presentation below.

Compared to individual imports, which let you copy one content item from the Temporary Content Repository to your development shell at a time, course imports allow you to copy multiple items in bulk. Course imports are generally discouraged for content reuse because they are less refined compared to individual imports. However, if a course import does seem more appropriate for your needs, you can find out more about them in the presentation below. Note course imports must be actioned from within your course development shell, not the relevant Repository course.

The Temporary Content Repository provides a more streamlined method of accessing and reusing UniSA learnonline and UoA MyUni content. It's existence makes it so you do not need to manually export content from these learning management systems. If the content you want to reuse is missing from the Repository or broken, then it is likely because it has not true equivalent in myLearning and you will need to recreate it new. This will mostly apply to Moodle content from UniSA learnonline and UoA MyUni content that uses Cidi Labs DesignTools.

However, if you do need to manually export content from UniSA learnonline or UoA MyUni and import it into myLearning, please refer to the vendor guides in the table below. You may need to contact the relevant UniSA/UoA course coordinators for assistance locating and importing content from the existing institutions' learning management systems, should you not have access yourself.

Checking for broken links and unused content

Reusing content may result in your course having broken links (i.e. if you import a page that links to a file, but forget to import the file) and/or unused content (i.e. if you bring over content that you don't actually end up using). After you've finished setting up your reused content, it is recommended that you run a Cidi Labs UDOIT to check for broken links and other accessibility issues, and run a TidyUP scan to check for unused content. Complete these scans in your development shell, not the Temporary Content Repository course you copied from.

REMINDER: You still need to repair and realign your content! This includes reorganising it to fit the AU Course Template and your course's assignment groups.
